Summer Band Rehearsal Schedule

The Summer Concert Band series is open to all traditional concert band instrumentation. Generally speaking, all playing abilities are welcome to participate. Meaning a good deal of "rust" is totally acceptable.

The theme for this year is music inspired and loved by Dr. Frank Bencriscutto (aka Dr. Ben).

President’s Letter

We are now well into 2012 and there are many exciting things occurring within UMBAS! Our plate is full with the Engagement & Excellence campaign, Summer Bands, Homecoming, Mentorship, and a number of other initiatives. We are hard at work to refine these opportunities to better serve everyone. Overall, we can accomplish great things by working together and staying positively focused on our mutual goals – first and foremost, supporting our great University!

Pep BandDid you know that UMBAS helped the Marching Band’s Pep Bands travel to the Women’s Hockey Frozen Four in Duluth, Men’s Basketball National Invitational Tournament in New York and Men’s Hockey Frozen Four in Tampa Bay?

These trips are part of the outreach mission of the University and allow our Marching Band program to share our pride and spirit with fans and alumni that live in those areas or attend the games.

We just welcomed our first recruiting class, and as I said to our fans on National Signing Day, you deserve all the thanks in the world for helping me and my staff keep this great class at home. You make my job easier by showing our football players, recruits and fans what a great place Minnesota is.

Summer Band Concert Series: June 19th and July 2nd

This year's summer band will feature the music Dr. Frank Bencriscutto loved, as a tribute to his life and legacy 15 years after his passing.

We will perform on two Tuesday nights this summer. The first concert will be on Tuesday June 19th at the Lake Harriet band shell in southwest Minneapolis. The second concert will be on July 2nd at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Lakeville.

Aquatennial Torchlight Parade: July 18th

This year, the Minneapolis Aquatennial Torchlight Parade will be on Wednesday night, July 18th. Typically, we schedule a call time of approximately 6:30 p.m. However, since our placement in the parade changes from year to year, and we don't typically find out our placement until day-of, we will post live updates on Twitter (@GopherBandAlums), Facebook

Looking Ahead to the Fall

Labor Day weekend we will be putting pep bands together for the two Volleyball games the U of M is hosting as part of the Diet Coke Classic. The teams they are playing are still TBA, however in the past it has been against national power-houses like Texas and Stanford. In addition to these games being a lot of fun to attend, volunteer incentives will apply.

Scholarship Summary

The UMBAS scholarship committee reviewed 21 applications, conducted 6 interviews, and selected 3 students to receive Jalma Scholarships this year.

The scholarships were awarded during the Band Extravaganza Concert on 27 April.

Volunteer Recognition Program

The UMBAS is proud to once again announce a volunteer recognition program that will reward our members for participating in playing events, volunteering for events and serving as ambassadors to our organization.

UMBAS members can earn points for each event they participate in starting this fall. Awards for point redemption will then be made available as they are determined by the council.

A summary of how individuals can earn points and possible awards associated with the points can be found on our website at skiumah.org.
