2018 Board Nominee Bios

Kelly Nellis

Years in Band: 2008-2012
Ensembles: Marching Band & Campus Band
Instruments: Colorguard & Clarinet

I would like to continue my time in UMBAS because I have a passion for the Pride of Minnesota and its members, past and present. I hope to continue making an impact alongside other members of the board and contribute with my unique perspective and experiences from involvement in leadership positions within other organizations. I will also continue to strengthen and maintain the society as many others have over the years. It has been a fantastic year creating opportunities for the society to support the band programs! Thank you for your consideration.

At-Large Reps

Kevan Ahlquist

Years in Band: 2010 - 2014
Ensembles: Marching & Concert Bands
Instrument: Trumpet

Hi, I'm Kevan. I played trumpet with the marching and concert bands from 2010 to 2014. I'm currently a software engineer with Amazon and I organize a local brass band. I want to join the board to give back to the band in two areas. First, I want to advocate for data-driven approaches to recruiting and engagement. Second, I want to help us use the latest technology to improve our communications and online presence.

Brent Elert

Years in Band: 1979 - 1986
Instrument: Trumpet

I have been part of the UMBAS since leaving school, and was last on the board in the 1990’s. After years of raising 3 sons, I have more time to give back now, and would be happy to become part of UMBAS leadership once again.

Morgan Redemann

Years in band: 4 total (1 - UMMB (2014-2015, 3 - AAMB (2013-2014, 2015-2016/17)
Instrument: Auxiliary - Feature Twirler: Gold Twirler (UMMB), Twirling Team Member (AAMB)

Though my time was short with UMMB, it was an amazing and humbling experience to twirl for this band, getting to know fellow bandsmen and women, performing, and serving the band as a Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi. I am ever grateful for the opportunity to be part of something so much greater than myself during my time as a graduate student, and would like to give back to the organization that made my twirling and graduate school dreams come true! I am interested in being on the board as a Member-at-Large for UMMB as a means of continuing to serve the band as an alumnus, as well as continue to support music and the arts. Twirling for two Big Ten bands, being a Brother of two Kappa Kappa Psi chapters (Kappa Alpha - Active Brother and Gamma Pi - Treasurer), and volunteering in the Advancement (alumni relations) office for the All-American Marching Band as part of the Volunteer Management Team has contributed to a diverse set of experiences that can lead to opportunities to enhance the alumni experience as well as student experience here. I would like to stay connected and develop new connections within the band and band alumni organizations through my membership on the board to promote a cohesive and engaged alumni organization to further support our bands.

Teresa (Houlding) Rink

Years in Band: 1996 - 2000
Instrument: Flute

I have previously served on the UMBAS board as Secretary (2011-2012). I am interested in serving as a part of UMBAS again as I have appreciated the growth and development of UMBAS in the last 10 years and would like to be able to help continue this growth & support of the U of MN bands! Ski-U-Mah!

Jacob Wright

My name is Jacob Wright, but in band I have always been known as Stone Cold. As you can probably guess, I play the tuba. I was in band for 4 years (2 as a section leader) and graduated this past May. For those who don’t know, I did not grow up in Minnesota. I’m from a town in southeast Kansas called Emporia. When I came to the U it was for entirely practical reasons. I was going to major in Chemical Engineering and the U had one of the best programs for it. What I didn’t count on was the family I would get when I joined the band. No group has ever been more welcoming and supportive than this band was to me. I sincerely believe joining is the only reason I am where I am now. That is why I want to join the board. I feel it’s the best way to give back (and help others give back) to the organization that has given me so much. I have both the time and the passion to take on additional responsibilities. I hope you will all decide to give me the opportunity to show just how much I can do for the Alumni Society.
